Methods for Leadership Multiplication

“Multiplication is the intentional transfer of knowledge, skills, and expertise into the people you lead.”

Without an intentional strategy for leadership multiplication, you will:

* Leave influence on the table

* Fail to maximize the full potential of the individuals and organization

* Reach a Capacity Constraint that Eventually Leads to Burn Out of Key Leaders

The 4 Methods are:

Informing

Engaging content well delivered through multiple channels with no interactive process.

Training

A Facilitated Learning Event with clearly defined objectives utilizing a controlled interactive process.

Coaching

Consistent investment in a small number of leaders over time, a two way interactive learning process with mutually agreed objectives.

Apprenticeship

Long term investment in selected leaders who have the capacity and desire to replicate your skills and competencies.

Self-awareness can be a difficult path.

Learning to hold up the mirror in front of ourselves and be brutally honest with what we see doesn’t come naturally to most people. It’s a necessary path, however, and one that I always begin with when coaching leaders.

Our growth never truly ends.

This process of knowing and leading ourselves is a lifelong pursuit. Because of this, we like to represent it as an infinity loop that speaks to a couple of things…

1. We never fully ‘arrive’.

We don’t wake up one morning to finally realize, “I’m there! I don’t have anything left to learn.” There is always room for growth and improvement.

2. We must intentionally pursue growth.

Our tendencies will always be our tendencies. We must intentionally look for and work through them.

The journey is worth it, and the destination of a life-long pursuit of intentional growth is better than a life of accidental wandering. If you’re not already, step onto the trail today and begin walking the path of becoming a leader worth following.

Self-Awareness & Applications

How can I learn about myself/my personality to prepare for an application?

It’s a good exercise to think through your skills and talents as well as how you are wired. What’s it really like to be on the other side of you? This insight is significant for every relationship in your life and also as you consider the type of organisations to work for, the working practices that you like, the people you want to work with and whether your values align with those of the place you’d like to work.

I’d suggest you do a test but also talk to people you trust. Ask them how they experience you. Use it as an opportunity to become more self-aware. Pick a range of people and find out what it is they value you for?

Knowing yourself is a gift that will set you up for your whole career and ensure that you are a leader that people will want to follow. As hard as it might be to hear the truth it will differentiate you from many others.

On Culture: Change vs. Innovation

How do you know when something is changing versus innovating?

So how do you know when something is innovating or if something is changing?

The reality is when innovation occurs, change happens in accordance to the scope of that innovation. Similarly, when change occurs, things adapt to the change in the form of innovation.

The secret is in the intent of the leader of the particular change or innovation. And since most people don’t like change I think it is important for you to go through a process of determining which is which. Here is a template that might help…

1. What is the leader or person trying to do?

2. What are the positives and negatives of either the change or innovation?

3. What will happen if we don’t innovate or we don’t change?

Innovation can be extremely rewarding and it can be messy.

Change can be very fun and it most likely will be frustrating.

The secret to managing your emotions and understanding change is to diagnose the intent of the leader of change, review the pros and cons, and ask the hard questions of what would happen if we didn’t innovate.

The 100-Day Plan

If you set goals and go after them with all the determination you can muster, your gifts will take you places that will amaze you. -Les Brown

If it takes 66 days for the behavior to become automatic and we seek improvement, it will take longer to actually measure the improvement.

First: Define the goal. Analyze how the actual problem makes us feel and visualize the changes to our life once we resolve the issue.

Second: Plan our change program and establish subgoals. Whatever we are setting out to do, the plan simply must be sustainable.

Third: Commence to getting rid of negative behaviors. Control our environment to reduce exposure to temptation.

Fourth: Hang tough—even if we suffer an occasional slip.

Fifth: Persist. Establish a healthy lifestyle that works directly against our problem behavior.

Take another quick look at the steps above and remember: clearly define the change you want to make! “A goal properly set is halfway reached.” ~ Zig Ziglar.

It’s only 100 Days: less than 1/3 of the year, 2400hrs. And it’s your life—give it a go!

Mindfulness = Awareness + Intention.

"Dont confuse having a Career with having a Life"-Hillary Clinton

Knowing this, here’s a questions for you to consider: How mindful are you of your time in managing life and leadership?

Mindfulness combines being aware and focusing your intent. The formula is pretty straight forward: Mindfulness = Awareness + Intention. Awareness includes being conscious of the internal and external stimuli that interfere with your thinking. “Mental chatter” is a fact of the human condition that can create distortion limiting your ability to focus on staying connected and aware.

It’s Not About Balance. It’s about finding a new rhythm.

Instead of seeking balance, I would offer that the aim of secure leadership is more pointed at work/life effectiveness. This is an expression I believe most strikes at what it is we are after. Effectiveness is the degree to which something is successful in producing a desired result. Success is found in finding rhythm instead of equilibrium. By focusing on rhythm, you acknowledge there are times when your pace is going to be much more oriented to work, home, self, or community.

Telling Your Time Where to Go (Instead of Wondering Where it Went)

ADMIT YOU DO HAVE CONTROL

Admitting is half the journey. When I ask people where they spend most of their free time, however, a common answer I get is, “Free time, what’s that?!” Free time isn’t empty time. Free time isn’t the moment you tell yourself, “Wow, I’ve got three extra hours today that I have no idea what I’m going to do with!”

IDENTIFY TIME BARRIERS

Let’s consider what free time looks like. Use the following questions to think about how you use it…

* Where do you spend most of your free time?

* The last time you had a choice about what you did with your time, what did you use that time for?

CONSIDER YOUR IDEAL WEEK

Another helpful exercise is to think through your week and block out what you would love your ideal week to look like.

PROTECT THE FLOW OF YOUR DAY

Even when we have an idea of how we would like our days to look, our reality doesn’t always match.

The “Oughts and Shoulds” of Culture

The Effect of Culture and Environment on Preference and Creativity

Cultures Idealize Specific Personalities and Tendencies

It’s about envisioning a future and bringing it to fruition.

Cultural Expectations and Dissonance

Years of nurturing influence from our parents, communities, cultural groups, and broader society have placed a set of powerful expectations on our lives that both consciously and subconsciously affect the decisions we make.

Personality Ideals Indicate Cultural Values

In some cultures, to work for the government is the pinnacle of achievement, and if you can’t do that, then you work in education, because they’re the two most stable, recognized professional systems.

Impact of Environment on Creativity

And while we don’t get to utilize our dominant hand all the time, it’s really helpful to know where we start from naturally, and how our work environment impacts our productivity and creativity as a result.

The Role of Art: Sensors and Intuitives

When it comes down to it, a great deal of Intuitives use the things they see as triggers to the future, while Sensors usually prefer to store memory and preserve the knowledge of concrete places they’ve been.
